DIY Outer Space Room Decor with Glow in the Dark Heat Transfer Vinyl

What appears to be a simple bright neon looking pennant gives a pleasant surprise when the lights got out at night. It’s so much fun to have a scene from outer space fill the room with a glowing effect. Your kiddos will love “charging” the pennant before bed so they can drift to sleep with a far-out space scene glowing in their room. Anything that glows-in-the-dark is cool in my book! Check out the video below to see how to make an outer space pennant using glow-in-the-dark heat transfer vinyl!

Here are the supplies you will need:

Step 1: Cut your felt so it measures 11” wide and 12” long.

Step 2: Add a dot at the bottom middle of your pennant (at the 5.5” mark). Then, draw a straight line down 2”.

Step 3: Next, draw a line from the sides of the pennant to the bottom of the line you just drew, connecting them and making the bottom of the pennant. Finally, cut it out.

Step 4: Open the Cricut cut file and Press “Make it”.

Step 5:  Change the vinyl size to 9”x12” and select “Heat Transfer Vinyl” from the material options.

Step 6: Remove the yellow backing on all the vinyl sheets.

Step 7: Place the glow-in-the-dark heat transfer vinyl on the cutting mat with the liner side facing down. Then, add it to your Cricut (or Silhouette) machine to cut. Repeat this step with the remaining designs and vinyl colors.

Step 8: Trim done all the vinyl designs and weed the negative.

Step 9: To add the glow-in-the-dark heat transfer vinyl to your pennant, heat up your EasyPress (or iron) to 280 degrees. Add one section of planet design, place the Teflon sheet on top, and heat it for 30 seconds. TIP: Add all your designs to your pennant before you start. This will help you get an idea of placement.

Step 10: Let the liner cool for 8-10 seconds and then peel it off. If your design is not completely adhered, place the liner back down and heat if for a few more seconds until it sticks.

Step 11: Continue adding the space elements to your pennant until they have all been added.

Step 12: Add hot glue to the top of the pennant and fold it over .25”. Only press down where the glue was added.

Step 13: Slide your dowel rod through the opening in the top.

Step 14: Cut a piece of baker’s twine 16” long and tie it to both ends of the dowel rod. Trim the excess.

Step 15:  Add hot glue to the yellow pom-pom trim and glue it around the exterior of the pennant.

All you need to do now is find a home for this cute outer space pennant and watch the excitement grow as the lights go out at night! If outer space isn’t your thing, just change to design to something you prefer along with the felt and pom-poms to match your theme!
