Difficulty figuring out what side was cut side.

I had a difficult time trying t figure out what side the cut on and what side to lay on the cutting mat.
I ruined 3 pieces of material I had cut for a project. Instructions were available via RQ code. My phone doesn't read QR codes & I won't download an app to read them.
But, I decided on 4 starts because once I figured it out, it works fine.
